One delicious bite of pineapple can instantly transport you to a summer state of mind. Pineapple satisfies a sweet tooth while offering a high dose of manganese and vitamin C, along with other vitamins and minerals. But tasty as they are, choosing and cutting a pineapple can be intimidating. Use this simple guide to make easy work of finding a perfect pineapple and slicing it into delectable bites.
Selecting:
Look for a fresh pineapple with no brown spots. Pineapples should be firm and have a sweet smell to them when sniffed. A simple tip to tell if a pineapple is ripe is by gently pulling on the center leaf. If it easily pops off in your hand, the pineapple is likely ripe and ready to be enjoyed. Before making your final selection, check the bottom of the pineapple to make sure it hasn’t been damaged from transport or handling.
Cutting:
Once you have your perfect pineapple at home, you are ready to cut and enjoy it. Follow these steps to have it cut and ready to enjoy.
1. Use a sharp serrated knife to cut off the top and bottom.
2. Rotate the pineapple as you slice thin strips of the outer covering off the pineapple until the pineapple looks clean with only the yellow flesh showing.
3. A. Use a pineapple corer to remove the core
OR
B. Slice the pineapple in half vertically, then quarter those halves.
4. If using method B, use your knife to make a diagonal cut to remove the core.
5. Slice, dice, or cube the pineapple to whatever shape you desire.
6. Enjoy(and never be intimidated by a pineapple again)!
