New Year, New You: Setting Goals for the New Year

  Posted on   by   No comments

The close of one year and arrival of a new is not only the passage of time, but also a time for fresh starts and goal setting. As this year comes to a close to make way for a new year, be sure to include healthy eating as part of your goals. Even if you’ve never included nutrition as part of your New Year goal setting, or even if you’ve never set a New Year’s resolution at all, we’ve got you covered with simple steps to make healthy, achievable goals that will set the tone for this being your healthiest year yet!

Start setting goals for the new year with these tips:

  1.    Make an Honest Assessment. It can be easy to get so excited about what you want to achieve in the future that you neglect to learn from the past. But, before you jump into setting goals for next year, take some time to reflect on the past year in terms of your health and nutrition. What areas were a struggle? What do you feel like your strengths were? When did you feel your best? What seemed to really work for your family and what didn’t? Were there things you hoped to achieve that you didn’t get a chance to…this could be your year!
  2.    Consider Limitations. Even if we don’t like to admit it, we all face some limitations in our goals. For example, if you have to drive two hours to get to a farmer’s market, a weekly trip may not be a realistic goal to make, but perhaps a monthly trip is more attainable. Look at factors such as budget and time constraints in setting goals that are aspirational, but also achievable.
  3.    Account for New Information. Has anything changed in the past year? Perhaps allergies or medical conditions were diagnosed or perhaps your family experienced changes like a move to a new area. Be sure to factor these changes in as you think about the goals for you and your family for the next year.
  4.    Keep It Simple. Your goals do not have to read like a dietetics textbook. Something as simple as introducing yourself and your family to a new food each week can be a fantastic goal.
  5.    Write it Down. Once you have figured out your New Year resolutions, write them down somewhere to give yourself accountability and a reminder.
  6.    Give Yourself Grace. Remember that even health and nutrition professionals make slip ups from time to time. Grant yourself grace if you make a mistake or need to change course along the way.
