A Fresh Start: Starting Over After Making Diet Mistakes

  Posted on   by   No comments

It’s happened to us all at some point: you’re doing great following a healthy eating plan, then a couple of poor choices catapult you into a downward spiral to the point that you feel totally discouraged about your healthy eating plans. Whether you follow a specific eating plan as a personal choice, by medical mandate, or to achieve optimal health, it can be discouraging when you feel you’ve lost your way on your plan. Don’t give up if you’ve made some missteps though! Multiple strategies can be effective in helping you get a fresh start on sticking to your healthy ways of eating. Try one or more of these strategies to help you reach your goals again.

1. Make the Changes Right Now. It’s all too easy to push changes off till ‘tomorrow.’ The problem is that tomorrow tends to get put off until the day after tomorrow, then next week, next month, and so on. Instead of delaying the changes you know you want and need to make, start as soon as you realize you need to make the changes. Even if the day is almost over, making just one small step in the right direction before the day ends can set a series of healthy choices in motion.

2. Hit the Reset Button. After making some food choices that don’t agree with your system it can sometime be beneficial both mentally and physically beneficial to hit the reset button on your system. Don’t go to dangerous extremes, but having a day where you focus on getting the most nutrients possible can help you get the fresh start you need and be healing for your body. Try adding in servings of bone broth throughout the day for its protein and healing collagen or sip on green juice throughout the day in addition to balanced meals (make sure it’s heavy on vegetables!).

3. Revisit Your Reasons for Your Diet. If you’ve lost your motivation as you’ve fallen away from your healthy diet, revisit the reasons you aim to follow a healthy diet in the first place. Reminding yourself about the increased energy, decreased health problems, improved appearance, and more can help you recommit to your healthy ways.

4. Give Yourself Grace. Imagine you were talking to a friend or family member who had veered from his or her diet. Would you berate that person for poor choices? Not likely. More than likely you would let them know we all make mistakes and encourage them to make a fresh start. Give yourself that same grace you would give to others!
